The North Carolina Standard Course of Study for 7th grade math outlines five goals that the students learn throughout the course of a year. These concepts that are taught are added onto previous years' knowledge. NCSCOS for 7th grade

Goal 1 - Rational Numbers:
Rational Numbers
  • Students will use ratios, proportions, and percents.
  • Students will use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with rational numbers.
  • Students will learn to use differing ways to complete math problems such as mental math, estimation, calculators, and paper and pencil methods.

Goal 2 - Measurement with Two and Three-Dimensional Figures:
Architects in Action: Drawing Objects to Scale
  • Students will learn to draw pictures to scale and use these drawings to solve problems.
  • Students will solve problems with volume and surface area of cylinders, prisms, and other three-dimensional figures.

Goal 3 - Geometry:
Congruent Polygons Fun Activity
  • Students will draw three-dimensional figures from the sides, front, back, corners, top, and bottom.
  • Students will build three-dimensional figures from various views.
  • Students will learn about cross-sectional views of three-dimensional figures and be able to describe them.
  • Students will learn what similar and congruent polygons are and be able to describe them.
  • Students will solve problems related to similar and congruent polygons by scaling and using proportions.

Goal 4 - Graphing and Data Analysis:
Mean, Median, Mode, and Range
  • Students will use graphs to solve problems.
  • Students will learn the mean, median, mode, range, frequency, distribution, and inter-quartile range for a group of data.
  • Students will use the statistical measures (listed above) to see how changes in these affect a graph.
  • Students will learn what outliers are and what their effects are on a set of data.
  • Students will solve problems that include multiple groups of data using the above statistical measures.

Goal 5 - The Beginnings of Algebra:
Solving Linear Equations
  • Students will learn about linear relations, sequences, and functions using algebraic tools.
  • Students will learn about variables in algebra and what they are used for.
  • Students will use variables to solve simple and multi-step algebraic problems.
  • Students will use mathematical formulas to solve problems.

Math Organizations: National Council of Teachers of Mathematics This is the national organization for math teachers.
Student memberships are only $39!
North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics This is the NC chapter of the NCTM. Small website, but provides information about NC conferences and links for the journal. Student memberships are free!
Resources for Teachers: Middle Grades SCOS Resources This is provided by ncpublicschools.org and includes lists of ways that teachers can meet each goal as well as lesson plans for all the goals in the SCOS for 7th grade math. This is a wonderful resource if you do not know how to teach a concept to the students.
Math Roots is a great resource for teachers to look for lesson plan ideas for the classroom. It is specially formatted for middle school teachers and has many different topics that are taught in 7th grade math.

Free Printable 3D Nets These can be used when studying volume and surface area of solids.
Interactive Games for Middle Schoolers This website has games for grades 7-12 that help reinforce concepts learned in class.
